City of Hartsville launches multiple street improvement initiatives

Beginning in February, the City of Hartsville will initiate three major road upgrade projects, made possible with funds from its Multi-County Business Park (MCBP) and aimed at addressing some of the City’s traffic concerns as well as development goals in the growing downtown district.

Recycler of the Month – January 2015

Shirley Lucas is the City of Hartsville’s Recycler of the Month for January 2015.

She said she recently moved back into City limits, and has appreciated how easily she can recycle her papers and plastics through regular pick-ups. She said she also likes to collect litter near her home to help keep her neighborhood clean, and takes the opportunity to recycle the cans and bottles she gathers.

East Carolina Avenue infrastructure work update

The mid-block closure on East Carolina Avenue between Fourth and Fifth streets is reopening Jan. 22 as crews complete the sewer and manhole improvements there.

Some additional storm drain upgrades will occur in the same area beginning Monday, Jan. 26. The area outside the Mantissa Executive Suites and Spa at 130 E. Carolina Ave. will close across both lanes on Monday, and at least one lane will close Tuesday.

City of Hartsville Parks and Leisure Services seeks input for planning of 2015 Dixie Girls Ponytails World Series

The City of Hartsville’s Parks and Leisure Services Department is hosting a public planning meeting for the 2015 Dixie Girls Ponytails World Series on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 5:30 p.m. at the Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center, 701 W. Washington St. Anyone interested in taking a role in the planning the tournament is welcome.

East Carolina Avenue sanitary sewer work rescheduled to week of Jan. 19

The closure of a portion of East Carolina Avenue for sanitary sewer improvements has been postponed until Monday, Jan. 19, and is expected to last for at least three days. The work, which was originally planned for Jan. 12 through 14, has been rescheduled because of a forecast of rain and potential freezing rain.

During the closure, workers will install a new manhole for maintenance access as well as a new sewer line for the Mantissa Executive Suites and Spa. […]

Student-created Project PERK working to foster relationship between law enforcement, young people

At a time when national news stories on the relationship between law enforcement and citizens have created renewed discussions on the value of community policing, one Hartsville teen has decided to become part of the local effort to build bridges between Hartsville’s police and its youth.
