Recycler of the Month – December 2015

Greta Godbey is the City of Hartsville’s Recycler of the Month for December 2015.

For years, she has sought to make sure that limited resources will be reused, she said, recycling paper, cans and bottles, and even maintaining a compost pile.

“If you reuse it, you don’t have to get new material out of the earth,” she said. “We have to think of our children, grandchildren, and great-great-great-great grandchildren, that they will still have something too.”

Hartsville High School Class of 1965 gives gift of downtown sidewalk bench to City of Hartsville

On the occasion of its 50th class reunion, Hartsville High School’s Class of 1965 has donated a new downtown sidewalk bench to the City of Hartsville.

Class committee member Brenda Newsome said the idea to provide the gift came when the committee realized that they had remaining funds after their reunion took place.

Business license renewal forms for the City of Hartsville to be sent out in February 2016

City of Hartsville business license renewal forms are expected to be sent out to in-city businesses in February 2016, later than they have been sent in previous years, after an upcoming Hartsville City Council meeting in which Council may determine the new due date for the forms.

Trash, recycling pickup changes for Christmas and New Year’s holidays

Several of the City of Hartsville’s trash and recycling pickups will move from their normal days to a new day during the Christmas and New Years holidays. The changes will be as follows:

Christmas Eve: Thurs. Dec. 24 moved to Tues. Dec. 22
Christmas Day: Fri., Dec. 25 moved to Wed., Dec. 23
Monday After Christmas: Mon., Dec. 28 moved to Tues., Dec. 29
New Year’s Day: Friday, Jan. 1 moved to Thurs., Dec. 31

Upgrades of public parking lot on East Carolina Avenue coming Dec. 19 – 20

Downtown Hartsville visitors will see infrastructure improvement work in the public parking lot on East Carolina Avenue, near the Hartsville YMCA, on Saturday, Dec. 19 and Sunday, Dec. 20, as the lot is sealcoated and restriped.

The portion of the lot closest to Cargill Way, Jones Family Eyecare and Waddell & Reed, Inc. is scheduled to close early Saturday morning, Dec. 19 to allow crews to sealcoat the lot. The area will close again Sunday morning for the lot to […]

City of Hartsville honors South Carolina’s Arbor Day with new tree planting in Pride Park

Members of City Council and City staff observed the City of Hartsville’s Arbor Day on Dec. 10, 2015 with the planting of a new Southern Sugar Maple tree in Pride Park, located at 630 S. Sixth St.

Mayor Mel Pennington, joined by other Council members, thanked representatives from the Public Service Department and Arborworks Tree Company for their efforts in developing and maintaining Hartsville’s trees.
