On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Mayor Casey Hancock represented the City of Hartsville at the International Conference on Stakeholder Engagement for Nuclear Power Programs in Vienna, Austria. Hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), this event brought together mayors and community leaders from around the world to discuss the local impacts, opportunities, and responsibilities associated with nuclear energy.

Mayor Hancock spoke as part of the “Nuclear Communities and Mayors in Focus” panel, where municipal leaders shared insights on community engagement, public trust, and local government’s role in ensuring transparency and safety in nuclear initiatives. Reflecting on his participation, Hancock said, “I’ll take any chance I can get to brag on my hometown, even when it’s on another continent.” He emphasized the importance of global collaboration in shaping sustainable energy futures as well, stating, “Being part of this global conversation is critical. Our communities are directly impacted by decisions in energy policy, and we must ensure that citizens have a voice in shaping a future that is both sustainable and secure.” 

The IAEA serves as the world’s central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. Its mission is to promote the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security and supporting the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Throughout the conference, delegates explored strategies for increasing public awareness, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and ensuring environmental protection while advancing nuclear energy programs. Mayor Hancock’s participation highlights Hartsville’s commitment to informed, forward-looking leadership and to playing a proactive role in global energy and sustainability conversations.
