The City of Hartsville marked a meaningful milestone Tuesday, June 17, 2025, with the completion of Phase One of the Marion Avenue Cemetery Restoration Project. Formerly known as the Hartsville Colored Cemetery, this historic site is the final resting place of many who shaped Hartsville’s history.

Mayor Casey Hancock opened the ceremony by reflecting on the cemetery’s deep significance to the community. Former Councilmember Johnny Andrews followed with an overview of the cemetery’s history, highlighting the lives and legacies of those buried there. Former Senator Gerald Malloy honored the generations of strength and service represented at the site and unveiled a plaque officially dedicating the new rose garden as the Adlena F. Graham Rose Garden, named in honor of the former City Councilmember whose tireless efforts were instrumental in making the restoration possible.

Phase One enhancements include fresh turf, new covered seating, and a beautifully landscaped rose garden. Mayor Hancock also announced plans for a new entrance sign, funded by the Davita and Gerald Malloy Foundation, which will further enhance the property.

The celebration brought together city officials, community leaders, and residents to reflect on the past and celebrate a bright future. Looking ahead, Phase Two of the project will utilize ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves, ensuring that all who are buried are honored and remembered.
