Ground Penetrating Radar Brings New Insight to Historic Marion Avenue Cemetery
February 26, 2026, community members gathered at the historic Marion Avenue Cemetery as Phase II of the site’s restoration officially moved forward. Residents had the opportunity to witness Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology in action and learn more about the careful, non-invasive process being used to help locate and identify unmarked graves.
Representatives from TerraSearch Geophysical, led by David Givens, were onsite conducting the survey and walking attendees through how the technology works. Similar to sonar, GPR sends signals into the ground and measures how those signals bounce back, allowing specialists to detect changes below the surface — all without disturbing the soil.
During the event, residents viewed preliminary radar images and heard firsthand how the data collected will help determine the number and locations of graves. This information is critical to ensuring the cemetery’s preservation while honoring those laid to rest there. By using GPR, the City is able to protect the integrity of this sacred historic site while gaining valuable insight into its past.
Preserving History with Care and Respect
The Marion Avenue Cemetery holds deep historical and cultural significance for the Hartsville community. Phase II of the restoration represents another important step toward documenting, preserving, and honoring the individuals buried there, many of whom may not have marked graves.
This phase focuses on:

The event also highlighted the strong community support behind the restoration initiative. Funding for this phase was secured through the leadership of Senator Gerald Malloy and the City of Hartsville, along with the continued advocacy and dedication of Adlena F. Graham.
Community members gathered near the Adlena F. Graham Rose Garden, a meaningful tribute within the cemetery grounds, reflecting the shared commitment to remembrance and restoration.
