The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a 20-year license renewal for the Robinson Nuclear Plant, extending its operation through 2050.

Located in Hartsville, the plant is a critical energy resource for the Pee Dee region and beyond. It generates 759 megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly 570,000 homes, and supports approximately 500 high-paying jobs.

The extension comes at a time when energy demand continues to grow across South Carolina. Continued operation of the plant helps ensure reliable and affordable energy while providing significant economic benefits to the region, including an estimated $28 million in annual local tax contributions.

Originally licensed in 1970, Robinson was one of the first commercial nuclear power plants in the Southeast. This latest renewal follows a comprehensive review process conducted by the NRC to ensure the plant can safely operate for the extended period.

The plant’s continued operation also reflects ongoing investment and modernization efforts, including $1.7 billion in equipment upgrades.

As part of Duke Energy’s broader energy strategy, nuclear energy remains a key component in delivering reliable, cost-effective power to customers throughout the Carolinas.
