Operations
The Operations Division of the Hartsville Fire Department is responsible for emergency response, training, staffing, and maintaining the equipment needed to protect the community. From a single station, the department responds to approximately 1,500 calls each year, covering a service area of roughly 54 square miles.
The department relies on teamwork, preparation, and efficiency to serve the community at a high level.
Approximately 40% of calls are emergency medical responses, highlighting the wide range of services provided beyond fire suppression.
Emergency Response & Equipment
The department operates a diverse fleet of vehicles designed to respond to a variety of emergencies, including fire engines, a 100-foot ladder truck, brush units, and support vehicles.
Through strategic use of funding, including grants and reinvestment in equipment, the department continues to expand its capabilities. This includes specialized equipment like a side-by-side rescue vehicle, which has proven critical during large community events by allowing crews to navigate crowded areas quickly and efficiently.
The department also operates one of the only fire pump boats in the area, primarily used for water rescues and dive operations.

Staffing & Structure
The Hartsville Fire Department is made up of both full-time and volunteer firefighters, each playing a vital role in serving the community.
Volunteer firefighters remain a critical part of the fire service, often balancing careers or businesses while dedicating their time to public safety.
Full-time shift personnel work a 48-hour on / 96-hour off schedule, allowing for both career commitment and personal balance.
Each shift is led by a captain and typically includes a team of firefighters responsible for daily operations, including:
- Equipment checks and maintenance
- Training and readiness
- Facility upkeep
- Reporting and documentation

Physical Fitness & Standards

Training follows standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and includes:
- Climbing stairs and ladders
- Dragging simulated victims
- Forcing entry into structures
- Strength and endurance exercises
Shift personnel are required to complete at least one hour of physical training per shift, often using high-intensity, functional workouts.
Cardiovascular health is a major focus, as 75% of firefighters die due to cardiac-related incidents.
Mutual Aid & Regional Support
The Hartsville Fire Department participates in a statewide mutual aid agreement, allowing departments across South Carolina to support one another during large-scale emergencies.
This partnership ensures that resources are available when needed, both for Hartsville and for neighboring communities.
False Alarm Fees
To reduce unnecessary emergency responses, the City of Hartsville has implemented a False Fire Alarm Fee schedule:
|
Offense (Per Calendar Year) |
Fee |
|
1st Offense |
No Charge |
|
2nd Offense |
$100 |
|
3rd Offense |
$200 |
|
4th Offense |
$300 |
False alarms place a strain on emergency resources. Proper maintenance of alarm systems can help prevent these occurrences and ensure crews are available when real emergencies arise.
