East Carolina Avenue to be partially closed for sanitary sewer improvements

The 100 block of East Carolina Avenue will be closed partially beginning Monday, Jan. 12 and lasting for at least three days for workers to install new sanitary sewer improvements. Crews will install a new manhole for maintenance access, as well as a new sewer line for the under-construction Mantissa Executive Suites and Spa at 130 E. Carolina Ave.

Recycler of the Month – December 2014

Phyllis Griggs is the City of Hartsville’s Recycler of the Month for December 2014.

A longtime recycler, she said she pays careful attention to what kinds of packaging can be recycled, and keeps a bin in her kitchen set aside for those items. Her recycling roll cart, she said, fills up more often than her garbage bin.

“I guess I just feel like it’s the right thing to do. Why throw something away that can be reused?” Griggs said.

Free Paper Shred and E-Waste Recycling Day at the Good Living Marketplace

The Good Living Marketplace, Nov. 8 on Cargill Way, will also feature the free Paper Shred and E-Waste Recycling is sponsored by SPC Credit Union from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Bring your paper documents for free shredding as well computers, cell phones and electronic devices with a cord for recycling. Large appliances, devices with Freon (refrigerators, air conditioners) will not be accepted.

Recycler of the Month – October 2014

Dell Gandy is the City of Hartsville’s Recycler of the Month for October 2014.

She said she has been recycling for a long time, always sorting out any plastic bottles, boxes and packaging which can be recycled, and keeps a bag of recyclables in her kitchen to periodically empty into her roll cart.

“I enjoy recycling because I know it benefits our community, the environment and the planet,” she said. “I also feel it is our civic responsibility.”

Hartsville’s Oakdale neighborhood receives innovative Eco-Flex rubber sidewalks

Hartsville’s historic Oakdale neighborhood is receiving a new pedestrian infrastructure project which stands as the first of its kind in the region. The City of Hartsville is installing Eco-Flex rubber sidewalks alongside some sections of Oakdale’s streets this week, an improvement made possible by a S.C. Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant received for the neighborhood. The project is intended to reduce the long-term damage that concrete sidewalks and trees often cause to one another.
