Recycler of the Month – September 2015

Jeannie Wilkerson is the City of Hartsville’s Recycler of the Month for September 2015.

Wilkerson said she recycles everything that she can, and requested a full-sized recycling roll cart from the City to make sure she does not run out of space. Recyclers of the Month – August 2015

Shirley and Edward Ruffin are the City of Hartsville’s Recyclers of the Month for August 2015.

The family recycles everything, Shirley Ruffin said, including glass, paper and plastic, and keeps a bin inside the house dedicated to recyclables. She added that even her grandchildren have shown an interest in making sure recyclable items aren’t thrown in the trash.

City of Hartsville calls for voluntary water usage restrictions after Darlington County enters moderate drought status

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ Drought Response Committee has designated Darlington County to be in a moderate drought status this month. Under these conditions, Section 82-144 of the City of Hartsville Code calls for the City to request voluntary reductions in usage among water customers to prevent depleting the water supply available for consumption, sanitation, fire protection and other essential needs.

Customers are asked to consider these steps to reduce water usage:

Recycler of the Month, July 2015

Imogene Price is the City of Hartsville’s Recycler of the Month for July 2015.

She has found Hartsville to have an excellent recycling program, and said that she encourages everyone to take advantage of it. Recycling items like cans, bottles and mail takes little time, she said, adding that she believes conserving resources and being a good steward is her duty as a Christian and a citizen.

East Carolina Avenue repaving work coming July 15-16

Street repaving will take place in front of the Mantissa Executive Suites, 130 E. Carolina Ave. next week following the recent installation of stormwater improvements at the site. The work is expected to take place between Wednesday, July 15 and Thursday, July 16, depending on weather conditions. During this time, both lanes of traffic will be closed at the site. The rest of the 100 block of East Carolina Avenue will be open to vehicles.

Recyclers of the Month – June 2015

Cheryl and Johnny Taylor are the City of Hartsville’s Recyclers of the Month for June 2015.

The Taylors say they often recycle items like newspapers, cans and bottles. Johnny said that if he ends up with a plastic bottle on hand when he’s away from home, he always takes care to bring it home and place it in his recycling bin.

Block of East Carolina Avenue closed June 25 for tree removal

The eastbound lane of East Carolina Avenue between First and Second streets will be closed tomorrow, June 25, beginning at about 8:30 to 9 a.m. as city crews remove a tree. The lane is expected to be closed through at least noon.

East College Avenue south parking lot closing Monday, June 29

Beginning Monday, June 29th, the East College Avenue City parking lot on the south side of the street, the lot closest to Carolina Avenue, will be closed as repaving work begins.

This is a portion of the project to repave East College Avenue, its sidewalks and parking lots, as well as Mantissa Row. The south lot will be closed for at least eight weeks beginning Monday.

Mantissa Row alleyway improvements begin May 18

Beginning Monday, May 18, upgrade work will begin for Mantissa Row from Fourth Street to the Mantissa Executive Suites boutique hotel construction site. This work will include repaving, improved storm drains and integrating roof drains. Afterwards, crews will move on to repaving and reconfiguring the East College Avenue lot closest to Mantissa, repaving East College Avenue and its sidewalks, and then the lot closest to Sophia’s Pizzeria and the Arcade Barber Shop.

Recyclers of the Month – April 2015

Tiffany and Ford Wallace are the City of Hartsville’s Recyclers of the Month for April 2015.

Tiffany said much of what the family throws out, such as bottles and shipping boxes, goes into recycling. She has long been a recycler, she said, and has taught her son to be one as well.

“I’ve always felt it was important,” she said. “It’s just as easy to throw items in recycling.”
