The City of Hartsville is currently conducting a search for a new Police Chief.

The successful candidate will value the relationship between the Police Department and the community it serves, developing transparent communication channels that keep the public well informed and offer opportunities for public engagement. Additionally, this person will focus internal efforts on developing a well-trained staff who have the resources and professional development necessary to maintain the exceptional quality of life in the City of Hartsville. The Chief of Police will implement policing best practices and will cast a compelling vision for the future.

The successful candidate must be an out-of-the-box thinker and approach challenges in an innovative manner. This person must demonstrate experience in delegation, mentoring and creating opportunities for growth, training, and career development within the organization to inspire confidence among members of the Hartsville Police Department and encourage a Culture of Excellence, Integrity, and Accountability.

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, political science, law enforcement, public administration, or a closely related field and 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in public safety or law enforcement, including five years of administrative and management responsibilities. Completion of basic law enforcement training academy and experience with a thorough understanding of community policing concepts and practices; or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. The position requires certification as a Police Officer within the state of SC. A successful out-of-state candidate will be required to meet SC certification criteria within a reasonable period to be determined upon acceptance of the position and a valid SC driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of relocation.
